Fear grows as Mali extremists compile list of unmarried mothers

Faith Karimi of CNN reports that Islamist extremists occupying northern Mali have “vowed to impose a stricter form of Islamic law” – compiling lists of unwed mothers in hopes of enforcing sanctions on relationships outside marriage. According to Karimi, women and children in the region are especially at risk, as extremists in the area have been conducting punishments ranging from public executions to amputations and floggings.

According to an article published in the Huffington Post, extremists in the northern Malian town of Hombori have recently raided the local market, “confiscating amulets that people were wearing.” About ten extremists from the radical Islamic sect the Movement for Unity and Jihad in West Africa (MUJAO) burst into shops Tuesday morning, confiscating cigarettes and dried tobacco leaves. According to the article, the raid was the “latest attempt by Islamists to impose shari’a on Mali’s moderate north.”
